World War I

Over 250 Birchfield Harriers served in World War I (then known as "The European War") and more than 30 are known to have died with many others injured. Their stories were often recorded in the local press and the current "Running Between the Lines" project is researching and recording their histories.

About World War I Archive

Running Between The Lines project began in September 2015, we received a grant from HLF which allowed us to do the extensive research needed to find the histories of our WW1 heroes.

The Club used to have a large plaque which was a Roll of Honour, listing the athletes that went to War. This plaque was put into storage many years ago and sadly disappeared. All we have left of it is a photograph and we will create a new Roll of Honour at the end of our project.

Via this page you can access the histories that we have collated thus far, it is an ever growing work in progress as it is proving difficult to find records for everyone and photos of them.

If you have any information or queries then you can contact us via the comments section on the athlete’s individual page
